Sir Lewis Hamilton has added a major investment to his portfolio.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has joined the Denver Broncos ownership group, the team announced on Tuesday.

“He is a champion competitor who knows what it takes to lead a winning team and a fierce advocate for global equality, including in his own sport,” owner Rob Walton said in a statement.

The news follows a season in which ratings and popularity for Formula 1 have exploded in the United States — in large part due to the Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive.” Hamilton, arguably one of the biggest sports stars on the planet, is following suit by investing in the biggest sport in the U.S.

Why has the Mercedes star chosen the Broncos? Hamilton has two clear ties: He owns a sprawling mansion in Colorado and has a well-documented friendship with newly minted Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson.

Hamilton is the second major addition to the Broncos ownership group in recent weeks. In mid-July, the team announced it had added former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
